When it comes to marriage we tend to simply replicate all we know or have been taught. In many cases we do not have the critical skills or information to do any different than what we have learned from others along the way.
The Knoxville Marriage Initiative aims to help couples discover a way to grow and keep a lifelong, strong marriage, through relationship education workshops and marriage mentoring. In Knoxville, churches are partnering together to provide pre-married couples with comprehensive relationship assessments, workshops informed by research about what makes marriages succeed or fail, and relationship mentoring by successfully married couples.
In “Foundations” workshops, pre-married couples will discover (1) the benefits of marriage, (2) normal stages and challenges all couples face in marriage, (3) skills and behaviors that build strong bonds and keep love alive, and (4) how to avoid the dangers of falling out of love and hope.
Workshop topics include:
- Commitment and Teamwork
- Communication & Conflict Resolution
- Managing Problems and Expectations
- Forgiveness & (Re)Building Trust
- Growing Friendship and Intimacy
- Sensuality & Sexuality
If desired, marriage mentors will journey alongside couples as they prepare to grow and protect a lifelong marriage, and assist them as they engage in the Married for Life Planning process.
